Hi, I just had my pap smear today, and the ob-gyn said that my cervix looks like it can bleed easily. She said I would have some bleeding afterward. I did but it is brownish in color. What can this be? I am waiting for the pap result, and very anxious to know.

Brown blood is just old blood. Newer blood is bright red in color.

Some spotting after a pap smear is normal because of the irritation of the special brush used to take the cells that are to be sent off for analysis.

It should clear up in a couple of days but if not let your OB/GYN know.

As for bleeding easily in general, that could be because of an infection such as with your cervix and I've had cervical infections show up on my pap results before.

Brownish discharge means that it is old blood, I would bet from the trauma of the pap smear itself. If it becomes bright red, that would indicate fresh bleeding and you might need to be seen somewhere if you are also cramping. Otherwise, not to worry, I did the same thing after some of my pap smears.

Most likely it's just old blood. Don't worry, it's very common, especially at the beginning of your cycle.

if your blood is brownish, it has probably dried, blood turns from red to brown after a while.
