ok, i disagree with these answers. I don't think that Chicago is "light" at all. It's about murderesses on death row! I think the entire show in fact has a dark overtone, even in the somewhat funny parts. It's a great show, but if you are looking for a lighthearted comedy, Chicago is not the show for you!

It's about the decadence of the society during the early 30's, where everyone acted motivated only by greed or the love for power. Much like today, now that you think of it. A bunch of selfish and self centered characters that try to obtain some benefit from the others that surround them. But the story is filled with exceptional music and choreography.

I find it very dark, actually. The apparent mood is light and bright and glittery, but underneath its full of despair. The two main characters spend everything grasping at stardom, but the audience realizes that what they are grasping for is just dust and emptiness. And they've given up everything else for it.

Early 20th century, good actors acting bad, great choreography, terrible music, uses cheap tricks to capture the audiences attention, the usual story...

You should watch the movies "Cabaret" and/or "All that jazz". They are excellent.

I was gifted with the DVD, and will see it performed live one day.

It's completely tongue in cheek, with dozens of metaphors and analogies.

It's light hearted even in the most dense portions, and certainly the music carries the show.

It's WIT and sarcasm; pathos and Joy, defeat and conquering, winning/losing, beauty and bland, triumph after a fact, and even the lawyer segments are meant to make one chuckle as to the sometimes reputation of attorneys, as well as those of show people, adulterers, etc.

Looks festive, happy, a lot of singing but haven't seen it just previews. It's not my style of movie.
