False positives are very rare, but do happen.
Often when a test is read beyond the specified time, as the urine evaporates it leaves a faint, colorless line.
Some tests are just infamous for false positives. The old Equate (white cap) was one of them.
LH is chemically similar to hCG1, and especially in women with PCOS, elevated levels of LH can cause a false positive.
If you are receiving shots of Gonadotropins with ovulation, chances are if you take a test before you miss your period it will be positive either way.
Methadone, chlordiazepoxide, or promethazine may cause false positive pregnancy tests.
Some women have a low level of hCG-like material circulating at all times, this may cause a false positive in rare cases, especially in very sensitive tests.
Some tumors may also cause false positives.
There's also a possibility that a yeast infection could cause a false positive.

He is wrong. You can have false positive's. Here's the proof.
How common is a false positive pregnancy test
and what causes it?
Home pregnancy tests
HCG pregnancy tests or home pregnancy tests determine pregnancy through the detection of the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman's urine. Doctors recommend that you wait until you have missed a period to take a home pregnancy test. If you can not wait that long to find out and you know the day you may have conceived, then the earliest you can take a test would be 14 days from possible conception. Home tests are usually 97% accurate when all instructions are followed correctly and the results are read on time. Some kits come with two tests so that in case you have made a mistake, you may take the home pregnancy tests gain. Learn more about the accuracy of home pregnancy tests in another relevant article.
False Positive Pregnancy Test Results and What Causes Them
A false positive pregnancy test is when the test says that you are pregnant but actually you are not. This is a one off case and a positive pregnancy test is a pretty good indication that you are pregnant. False positive pregnancy tests are rare - though there are instances and conditions where they can occur.
There could be various reasons for a false positive test.
Chemical Pregnancy
A chemical pregnancy is basically an early miscarriage. Research has shown that half of all first pregnancies end in miscarriage. Due to the high sensitivity of home pregnancy tests, many women catch early pregnancies but end up going on to have their periods due to a chemical pregnancy.
Missed Reaction Time
For accuracy in home pregnancy tests it is essential that you read the test results in the stipulated reaction time. If you let the test sit for too long (after the instructions on the box tell you), the test is invalid. This may cause it to show false positive results.
Chemical Interference
Drugs that have the pregnancy hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in them can cause incorrect results in home pregnancy tests. The Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in them may be responsible for the false positive pregnancy test. If you have had an HCG shot due to infertilty treatments, you need to be sure the shot is out of your system before you attempt to use early pregnancy tests.
Evaporation Lines
While technically not a true pregnancy, some pregnancy tests leave a faint evaporation line as the urine crosses the test. This faint very light grey evaporation line in the test area is often interpretted as a positive result.
AimStick pregnancy test strips have a very good reputation of NOT leaving evaporation lines and are much less expensive than brands you can buy in your local supermarket or drug store.

There are very very few reasons for false positives. Usually the reasons for false positives are early miscarriage (which you were in fact pregnant, so is not false at all), hcg containing fertility treatments and not reading the results within the allotted time limit, also if you get a (expired test) faulty test. These would be the only reasons, but the most common reasons are not reading the test results in time, or fertility treatments that contain hcg. In general, false negatives are much much more common than false positives.

to get a positive result (when they are infact pregnant) for atleast a week after their period is due, so bearing that in mind it was perhaops a litlle too optimistic to expect a result a week before you are due on. I tested negative with this pregnancy until I was well over a week late on my period and then i managed to get a faint line. I know how hard it is waiting (we've all been there, pleading for the lines to appear) and perhaps this month that will happen but it may need over another week or so to show up. Got my fingers crossed for you,
Use first morning urine (FMU).
By using urine from the first thing in the morning you actually have more of the hormone (hCG) that the test is looking for built up in your urine. This makes it more likely to get an accurate test reading. If you're worried you'll forget to collect it when you first get up, close the lid to your toilet and sit the pregnancy test on top. Some say that if you hold your urine for more than four hours it is the same as first morning urine. The key is to not overload yourself on fluids to make your urine more diluted.

Well to be truthfully honest he is.. Although false postives dont happen very often they do happen.. It is a very very rare situation, but none the less it happens.. If you took a test and it showed positive retest with another one, and see what those results say.. With both of my pregnancies I tested a couple of times just to make sure.. I got a few false negatives, but not a false positive.. Like I said though it is a very rare accurance..

You are right, unless the test gets contaminated from a pregnant woman.
The way it works, is it looks for the presence of the beta subunit of hCG or human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone is released by trophoblastic tissue in the placenta. In rare cases, it may be produced by a choriocarcinoma or some other germ cell tumours, or even other forms of cancer, e.g. lung cancer.
