There are basically two ways of putting photos onto fabric. You can buy iron on transfer paper that goes through your inkjet printer, then irons onto the fabric. This paper is available in most office supply stores and some craft stores. This is your best choice if you have been provided with a piece of fabric to embellish. I used it on a patch of muslin provided by HospiceCare for a memorial block for my grandfather. It is fine if the quilt won't have much use - display only. It doesn't wash well, or wear well, and it fades faster. If you use this, keep in mind that you need to reverse the image if there are any directional items in the photo (words, especially).
The second option is best if you are able to provide your own fabric. You can buy pre-treated fabric sheets at most fabric and craft stores. They are made to go through your inkjet printer (do NOT use a laser printer). The fabric has a paper backing to keep it flat while going through the printer. Some brands are better for certain applications than others. Some are washable, some need to be heat set. Read the directions before using to be sure you get the best one for your project. Be sure to set your printer at the highest quality to get the best picture. This is NOT cheap - one package with three 8 1/2 x 11 sheets costs around $10. If you are printing a lot of photos, consider making your own printable fabric by using Bubble Jet Set and Bubble Jet Rinse. Use a high quality 100% cotton fabric (I like Kona cotton), and wash it first to remove any sizing that will interfere with the ink. Iron some freezer paper to the back of it then cut it to 8 1/2 x 11 to fit through the printer. Some people leave a little extra freezer paper at the bottom edge, then fold it over and iron it to the front to help it feed through the printer easier.
Whichever you choose, good luck!

Good Morning....
If you do a web search for "memory quilt" you will find more information than you can ever digest.
If you are planning to make the quilt yourself from photo blocks, you will need to print the pictures onto the fabric you will use. I have found two options.... 1) to purchage packages of fabric designed for printing or 2) To purchase your own muslin, cut your fabric and back it with waxed freezer paper and then print either. Be aware that if you are printing photographs, that the whiter the fabric, the more crisp the image. (an off-white will absorb some of the shading in your photos).
My wife and I have finished two memory quilts, one using the packaged fabric and one using fabric that we made up using the freezer paper. Both gave us good results. I started out at Barnes & Noble reading their books on memory quilts which gave me a much more clear idea of the process.
I hope that this will at least give you a sense of direction on locating information....
Best of Luck and Happy Quilting

One problem with printer fabric is that it can never be washed. Transfers look shiny and eventually they will peel off. It's also very expensive if you are going to be printing a lot. So I do my own because I like to experiment.
I buy a tight weave fabric like Egyptian cotton, but a muslin that isn't bumpy will work. Make sure you get white, not natural.
I cut pieces a little smaller than 8 X 11 inches, then iron them to freezer paper, then tape that to card stock with a line of tape across the top of the material but not the sides or bottom. The freezer paper and card stock can be re-used quite a few times.
I set the printer on the thickest, which for my printer is felt textured greeting cards.
I also make sure the ink cartridge is fairly new.
After it's printed, use a fixative like http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1981-AA.shtml?lnav=chemicals.html
so it can be laundered in the future.

I have and all I do is purchase the photo transfer fabric/paper at the local quilt store or someplace like Staples. It tells you exactly how to do it.You need a scanner if you have pictures of your own you want to use or if you are getting some images online you just print it the way you normally would.
Make sure you get the right paper for the right kind of printer that you own.

Hi. I have made LOADS of photo quilts. You can use Jacquard inkjet fabric (available at Michaels...or from me :-), but it is not a permanent, washable item (believe me, I know). For about a year, I have been using my special (and very expensive) garment printer, which prints photos directly onto fabric, and is completely waterproof and washable -- great news for photo quilts. I charge $4 each to print photos onto the fabric, and can do any size you like, from 3x5 to 16x20. I'd love to help if you need it. Kathe@triangle-embroidery.com

I will be taking a class on this very subject in my guild on Saturday. In the past I have used prepared fabric sold in quilt shops called EQ Printables. It uses the inkjet printer and digital photos. If you have old (pre-digital) photos you can scan them into your computer to digitize them. I just followed the directions on the fabric package and so far....so good.

The bubble jet set & rince mentioned in another ans does give you a permenent & WASHABLE picture. I've made several quilts using this & it works very well . Much less expensive than buying the pre treated fabric , which works well also & is washable.

There is special "fabric" that you buy from fabric stores/quilt shops. Then you can print pictures onto the fabric using your own printer and computer.

go to an office supply or some shop that sells all sorts of printer papers, there is a specific kind of printer paper that is heat transfer paper, you simply scan in a photo and print it on this heat transfer paper and then iron on, it will work on white cotton im sure though most people iron it on tshirts. make sure you wash the fabric first to remove sizing before you try to iron it on.

you can buy packets of cotton sheets that are backed with a plastic film, these go thru your inkjet printers, they work very well, download your pics from the digital to the computer, find them and right click then print...the cotton sheets are a4 in size, good idea to crop or prepare your pics first.Victorian Textiles sell these sheets in packs of 25 I think and they are wholesalers, you could try your local craft shop in your dont have an ABN no.cheers Pat(longarm quilter)
