A router doesn't care what kind of modem you have. So what you've said doesn't make sense.
The ethernet connection between the modem and the router is all the router cares about. The modem has to be properly set so that the IP address is assigned to the router. The router then is in charge of using the ID/Password to establish the connection with your ISP and retrieve the IP address.

are'nt most cable modems a bridge that is just changing the CoAX to ethernet?
so long as you plug the ethernet cable into the WAN port on your router and your ethernet port on your cable modem it should work.
Ethernet is Ethernet.
BUT..if your cable provider says they are incompatible, then your only fix is to take it back to big-box mart and buy one that is compatible. Your Internet Service Provider should be able to supply you with a list..

hmm...
Some more details would help us out a lot.
What kind of modem are you using? It should have a model number listed somewhere on it.
What model Router?
Why is it not compatible? Does the modem only have USB output?
