AVG Free Edition is the well-known antivirus protection tool. AVG Free is available free of charge to home users for the life of the product. Rapid virus database updates are available for the lifetime of the product, thereby providing the high level of detection capability that millions of users around the world trust to protect their computers. AVG Free is easy to use and will not slow your system down (low system resource requirements). Highlights include automatic update functionality, the AVG Resident Shield, which provides real-time protection as files are opened and programs are run, free Virus Database Updates for the lifetime of the product, and AVG Virus Vault for safe handling of infected files.

Version 7.5 includes improved virus detection based on better heuristics and NTFS data streams scanning; a smaller installation and update files; and an improved user interface. The newest version is also compatible with Windows Vista.

Here's news for ya....the best "protection" is good surfing habits.

The biggest threat is yourself. You can only do so much installing a program for protection. But if you insist on visiting porn sites and illegal download sites, it's just a matter of time before you click the wrong button to install a piece of spyware that wreaks havoc.

With that said, look at Avast Antivirus (http://www.avast.com) as being a free alternative to giants like Symantec. Also get yourself a good personal firewall (even if you have a router) such as Zonealarm Pro. A firewall gives you the first indication that an infection is trying to contact the outside world. Most antivirus programs won't catch small browser infections that shoot advertising all over your desktop popping up windows and possibly sending your preferences across the net.

McAfee and Norton are about the best, with Norton probably being the more widely used.

I'm sure you can get a multiple license for an antivirus program at a reasonable price -- and if you watch the ads, you can catch a good deal. I recently got a 3-license deal for Norton 2007 for $9.99 - but I carefully check the weekly ads, looking for specials. It happened to be a one-weekend in-store special. Stores run them regularly to draw customers in to the store thinking you will buy other items.

You, also, have to be careful where you surf. Review the Privacy, Security and Content tabs in Tools, Internet Explorer. Take a good look at the Content tab and click "enable." More options there.

AVG free for anti virus (yes it is free)
Zone Alarm free( software firewall)
a router (hardware firewall)10-200 dollars)
and try two free spy ware checkers like
AVG free anti spy ware
windows defender
Ad-aware SE
Spy bot S&D
the experts suggest you run two different spy ware detectors because anyone does not get rid of all the spy ware
these are all free except the router and if you have hi speed internet then you already have it
HOPE THIS HELPS

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:

The safe surfing habits advice is rock solid. As far as software is concerned, download the following free programs:

1) CCleaner does an excellent job cleaning up temporary internet files, cookies, temp files, recycle bin, and prefetch folder.

2) If you don't have an antivirus program, EITHER AVG or Avast -- only install ONE.

3) Hitman Pro will let you automatically install, update, and run in Safe Mode many of the best free and free-to-try antispyware programs all with one click, including Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE, SpywareBlaster, Ewido, and free trials of Webroot Spysweeper and PCTools SpywareDoctor. The free version of Spybot Search & Destroy allows autoupdates, but Hitman Pro helps in keeping the others up to date with one click.

4) Winsockfix which is used to fix your internet connectivity if cleaning up malware breaks your internet connection.

First, run CCleaner to clean out temporary files. In the Advanced section only check off "Old Prefetch data". Then click on Issues and scan for issues. Have it fix them all and make backups in case something gets erased that shouldn't (although I've never had problems with CCleaner's issue fixes). Then Scan for issues again until you get "No issues found". Then click on Tools and uninstall programs you don't want, and while in Tools click on Startup to remove things you don't want starting automatically. If you're unsure what you need to keep you can google for advice or email me with your questions.

Then update your antivirus program and then reboot into Safe Mode to run a full scan, then reboot after cleaning up what it found.

Then run Hitman Pro with the Safe Mode box checked. Reboot after cleaning up what it found.

If your internet connection isn't working after removing malware, run Winsockfix.
