I have heard that it is just as well to be trained within the location since the bartending courses are so expensive. Also, how stressful is the job? I mean besides the initial difficulty of remembering the drink recipies is it a good part time job for those of you who have held it? I'm getting out of school soon and I just want something to supplement my income while I am looking for a job in my field. Thanks!

It is better to just train at a local bar, the best way to learn is to just jump in. start off slow like a morning shift learn how to make the regular and the popular drinks make sure you have a specialty drink(something YOU made up). what ever you don't know how to make you can look up in the bartender/drinks book. DO NOT TAKE A NIGHT SHIFT AT A BAR UNTIL YOU ARE READY!!! if you don't know how to make a drink and make it fast the customers will EAT YOU UP ALIVE. the pay is crap but the tips are GREAT!!! especially if you are a woman, wear a low cut or tight shirt(show off the twins) and the tips will be huge!!! Good Luck!

I learned on the job in a real tavern in Pittsburgh, where the most complicated order was a boilermaker or "shotnabeer."
Later on, my reference as a bartender which did not list my mixologist skills got me the next job which prompted me to learn more drinks from a book, parties and social drinkers.
It's a great job, part time or full time if you like people and can say "no" to someone whom orders from a prone position on the barroom floor or spilled his/her last two drinks before throwing the third one in your face. Being constantly exposed to alcohol and being permitted by the owner to drink for real what the customers will buy does put you at risk for becoming alcoholic if you don't keep your own private bottle of tea on hand. Pour it into an empty JD or Cutty bottle and never serve it to your patrons without a sprinkle of the real stuff from another bottle if they are drunk enough for you to ask them for their car keys.
Certificate of matriculation from a recognized bartending school is helpful on applications to hotels/casinos, but they will start you out as a "barback" anyway so you had best be serious about wanting to be a bartender as a career choice instead of a summer job. They love AA ppl with tavern service records as such bartenders won't be drinking up the profits, but since you don't intend to join wholeheartedly the ranks of the barkeeps, forget the school and learn to tappa kegga brew at the corner bar and pour an honest shot as well as deal without comment hearing profanity (unless it is really foul and you can "86" the patron to retain your other customers) a risque joke or the boring life story of a lonely old dude or faded lady.

NO it quite is a entire waste of time & funds. you could learn an identical stuff bar backing or as a waiter at a relaxing resteraunt. In the two circumstances you could play around after hours &/or disguise for batenders here & there. In the two circumstances you're in all risk to be promoted from interior of earlier they employ somebody it is totally unknown & unproven. i do no longer comprehend approximately different states, yet Texas is purely a TABC license, it is an identical element waiters & sometimes even grocery clercks would desire to take. that is large elementary, on line, & they prep you for it.
