I think people have summed it up pretty good here already. Some fear the type of death they will have, others ponder what happens after....

I have yet to read someone who worries about accomplishing things before they go, leaving their mark in the world.

I as well as others out there, wonder if I will be able to leave a small footprint in the world. Make a small difference, help in some way. Some things I have been lucky to do, while other I have yet to fulfill. I have been lucky enough to learn languages Mythology, go to different countries. Yet I have not been able to find the "one" have a family and a cozy little home somewhere away from too much madness. My biggest fear is not finding love.

Other people have found their loves, made their little families, and have left their mark on a different way. Perhaps they hope to leave a mark by taking care of their families, and make sure they are taken care of when they are no longer around.

Most of us have good, positive intentions, it's just a matter of how much time we have to make it come true, you know, racing against time.

People are afraid because even though they believe they are not true believers, and no mater how much time i explain this it will not make anyone less afraid so, once you are a true believer and accept the ultimate price of enjoying god's gift to human kind but in the back of your head you know that you have taken advantage of it some way some how and you doubt your path in life, in fact if you truly know than you will not doubt that god loves all his children and you still have tome to save your self of if you have even done anything wrong in the first place. Even the innocent assume guilt and in that guilt in thanking Ive could have been a better person you are afraid to die. Know your path and know your loard and you will have no fear. I know where im going do you?

If the death is not painful and sudden, but expected, I would say that the fear is the loss. There is the loss of who and what you have in life, which can be the loss of the dreams and the plans of things that will never be done. there is the loss of control and the development of dependence on the people that you had taken care of. there are people that will hasten death so that they do not need to be taken care of by their families. Some fear the pain that their death will cause their families or fear that their families will not want to be bothered with them, forcing them to realize their failure without the time or energy to repair it. Some know how terrible they feel and can only wait to see if they are going to feel worse. How could you not fear it?

Besides being afraid of the unknown, people are also afraid of things that they can't control. While there are some things that are avoidable, death is inevitable. As sure as a man was born, is as sure as he will die. What people need to do is make sure they live a life of purpose, so that they won't have time to waste being afraid of dying and that when they do die, it will be meaningful.

For some it's the fear of nothingness. For others a fear of God and his judgment. For Agnostics it's whether or not an afterlife exists. Depending on your beliefs, your view will change, also depending on the time in your life. It could also be dying without anyone knowing you existed or debating whether your life was truly "important". Things like that.

You are answering your own question. Obviously there isn't anything there to be afraid of, even the unknown, we don't even know what the unknown is. Anything you are doing to free yourself from fear is fear.

sure the fear of the unknown... i mean, who wants to go knowing that there's the possibility of ending up in hell?

it's also a fear of what will happen to those that the dying one will leave behind.. like if they can carry financially, emotionally, etc.

Alot of people are just unsure of what happens next or where they are going to end up. I, for one of many out there, am not "afraid" to die. I know that my eternal life has been secured through my steadfast belief in God and that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for my sins and that with that heart felt belief and faith in God that my fears are nothing to worry about, that He will and has prepared a place for me in Heaven.

exactly--the main thing is fear of the unknown. We can think & hope & believe we know what will come, but that's a very big step into mystery.
Life's a rut we would rather stay in.

My grandfather summed it up very neatly. I think that a lot of people may agree with him.

He said, "it's not the dying he minded; rather, he minded the process of dying."

The fact is that the process may be quite prolonged and painful, this is probably what the greatest number of people would like to avoid.
