Most computers have integrated graphics which is like having a cheap graphics card built into your motherboard. If your monitor conects at the area in the rear of your computer close to where your mouse and keyboard hook up its integrated if it connects where your pci slots are (long metal slotsat bottom rear of case)it has a graphics card.If you are going to buy one .Make sure you get the right one . they come in 3 main types PCI most common but they are a cheaper low end card AGP Higher performance but you have to have an AGP slot on your motherboard. They are gradualy being phazed out.And the best of the three PCI Express. It has the best speed and graphics and the most potential for upgrade if you decide to go cheap at first . My motherboard is what is called SLI compatible. That means I can run 2 SLI compaible Graphics card on 1 Dual Pci Motherboard.By combining the graphics power of 2 cards and channeling then through 1 vidieo output.I only have 1 nvidia geforce 7900gt rightnow but I would like a second one .I installed it to play Vidieos and movies by Using a 62 inch hdtv for a monitor .It's wicked

Yes, without a graphics card, no pictures. All laptops have a graphics card. I think some desktops use a different type, cause of the size issue. The higher the number in the card, the better. Means it can handle more. If you like to game, like World of Warcraft, you have to have a pretty good one or the graphics, or pictures, don't load properly. Or, if you want to run Windows Aero on Vista, need a good card too.

video adapter
- A video adapter (alternate terms include graphics card, display adapter, video card, video board and almost any combination of the words in these terms) is an integrated circuit card in a computer or, in some cases, a monitor that provides digital-to-analog conversion, video RAM, and a video controller so that data can be sent to a computer's display. Today, almost all displays and video adapters adhere to a common denominator de facto standard, Video Graphics Array (VGA). VGA describes how data - essentially red, green, blue data streams - is passed between the computer and the display. It also describes the frame refresh rates in hertz. It also specifies the number and width of horizontal lines, which essentially amounts to specifying the resolution of the pixels that are created. VGA supports four different resolution settings and two related image refresh rates.
In addition to VGA, most displays today adhere to one or more standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). VESA defines how software can determine what capabilities a display has. It also identifies resolutions setting beyond those of VGA. These resolutions include 800 by 600, 1024 by 768, 1280 by 1024, and 1600 by 1200 pixels

Graphics cards perform the processing necessary to display a picture on your monitor (hence the alternative term "video card"). Every computer has one.
