Your Dog or Africa?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today in my HIS 221 (Modern Europe) class with Professor Beasley, we discussed the selfish nature of all humans. In one example, Professor Beasley gave us two options. The dog you've had for 10 years and sleep with/feed/cuddle etc is being chopped to bits in front of your eyes, and there's nothing you can do as the killer makes mince-meat or your beloved best friend. Your other option? To let everyone in Africa starve/die. In a class of about 20 individuals (including myself) only two people chose the first option. (I chose the second)

I found this pretty intriguing, so I'm gonna post it here, to see what you guys think. I'm guessing the much more liberal Teenspot will have a differing view.

I don't follow. The two options are the brutual death of my dog or the famine and death or Africa? I would rather see my dog die. To think that I was responsible for a mass genocide because I enjoy my dog seems unbelievably selfish.

nothing right or wrong with being selfish it is human to be selfish and carrying depending on ones emotional state

You can save a dog and help those starving - the teachers premise of either or is nonsense

Under your rules, what would you do - save your child or all the starving people in Africa. Now some head chopping Arab terrorist may say he would save his kid so he could use him later as a bomb

I am too analytical. How is one dog going to save a million people in Africa? Why would you trade one life for another, that dog has just as much right to live as any human. Save the Dog

Your best friend???? YOUR BEST FRIEND?!?!?! It's your dog! Were all these people who chose number 2 girls? Look...everyone in Africa is already dying, overpopulation is becoming a real threat to our planet and a huge portion of HIV infected people reside in Africa. Plus people die in Africa at an alarming rate and wars break out constantly. It's not selfish it's just the greater good...and it's my damn dog.

No offense at all to you Jen M, but this is the stupidest question I heard in my entire 58 years. Every dog in the world is not worth the life of one human being
