There are two ways to get politicians to work for the people instead of the party or big paydays:

1) Take private funding out of the election process. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your side of the political fence) in a free society the government has no right to tell corporations or people that they cannot contribute their own money to a candidate that will represent them.

2) The people must become highly informed and interested in the political process-and vote regularly. This will enable us, as a country, to consistently hold politicians accountable for their actions.

Personally, I prefer option two because our current political system (while flawed) is fundamentally sound. There is a balance of power between the corporations and private donors (who fund campaigns) and the people (who vote candidates in and out of office). If the vast majority of the public is un-informed or ill-informed and do not participate in elections, the balance of power tilts heavily in the direction of the corporations and private donors. An informed and politically active society ensures that politicians will always give equal weight to the interests of his donors AND the interest of the people.

A long time ago W.C. Fields said in one of his movies "You can't cheat an honest man." What he said is basically still true today, you can't con people that aren't looking for something they know they don't deserve. That's how all the well known scams work.

Now, let's apply that to politics. People elect politicians who promise them things they don't deserve. Higher minimum wages, more social security, more medical care programs, tax everyone except you, and it all comes down to.... you can't cheat an honest man.

We have fallen so far that we don't even realize anymore what it is we are doing, trying to victimize every other group for our own benefit, convincing ourselves that its what is best for society. How can we know when we are one of these other-than-honest people that is walking right into the trap to be conned? Easy. When we convince ourselves that politicians are supposed to serve "the people", we're about to become victims.

How many of you know that they do NOT swear an oath to "the people of the united states", but rather an oath to "the constitution of the united states"?

That's why we always send liars to washington. We demand that they lie to us to get our vote, because a person who said "I'm going to go to washington and vote according to the constitution, so forget about pork with me" wouldn't get our vote.

You can't cheat an honest man.

Go thru with what they preach before election. Do what they say they are going to do. Listen to the people and not who pays the most contributions to them or their parties. Anymore they don't speak for the people and speak for themselves. We need someone to run that hasn't been raised by upper class intentions. And someone who knows what it's like to hold a hard job or earn what you own. Not someone raised on hand me downs. The rich will always make our decisions until we put a stop to it. 85% of Americans are middle class or lower. So why are they making our decisions? A majority of our politicians don't even know what it's like to hold a real hands on job.

It takes YOU--and me--it will take citizens willing to be involved and active in demanding accountability from public officials.

That is what Benjiman Franklin meant when he said" You have a republic--if you can keep it." Its not that "somebody ought to do something." "Somebody" is you.
