A couple of years ago I volunteered in a kindergarten classroom in my town. Our school district recently adopted an all-day kindergarten program. I came to the classroom during the afternoon, and I noticed that several of the students were tired and it was difficult for some of them to get their work done and difficult for me to encourage them. Do you think that since many school districts are adopting all day kindergarten, that naps should be brought back?

My sister used to teach Kinders and she said all day is very good for the kids, but IF they have a nap or two to help them wind down and to rest. And nap time or better resting time, allows the kid to let his/her mind wander and dream, while the teacher in the 15 minutes or so does required paperwork.

As a kid a lifetime ago I remember kindergarden and we had naps!

Suggest you play a quiet game with them that includes resting activity, such as laying on the floor and pretending they are a fish, or laying on their tummies and presenting they are swimming, etc., all which allow the muscles and the mind to relax. Also basic yoga has proven very good for little ones to allow them to learn to control their body, relax the muscles and the mind, etc.

Congratulations on volunteering!

I would say with an all day K, the students need a 10-15 minute time out for a nap. They will get energized by this little rest and they will be more attentive. I was a teachers aide for 3 yrs. for kids ECE, PRE-K, K, & 1st Grade. I moved around to different classes on the different days to help the lower graders with activities, but they were on half days. Those kids were ready to go home at 11am or 3pm(afternoon classes).
They were tired, but we had a good day with no naps. Now with the all-day K , they definitely need a nap.

Absolutely. The sleep needs of children at that age are different than an adults. A short nap will improve learning and discipline in the classroom.

I think naps should be brought back for every grade and in the work place as well. But yeah, Kindergarten definately needs a nap.

It isnt a bad idea. Not all the kids will take a nap but if they can at least lay down and rest for a while it could help them to chill out.

Definitely............Kids.....if at home, need to rest at least an hour under the age of 6. I think they work better after a nap.

Good Luck.

( Trying to get to sleep some kids, sometimes it's dificult, at the begining you will have to get ideas on how to motivate them to go to sleep)

Oh, absolutely. Kids as well as adults need a little break, about an hour. It helps the brain rejuvenate and you feel better and I think it's necessary for children's well being!
