I have noticed more in the past year of negative reporting by the majority of Fox News, CNN, MSNBC & etc. Why? I believe the media feels if they report negatively more people would stay tune for more. It has taken the American people back two steps. Our Soldiers are dying for what? The media doesn't tell us what is truly going on, the progress that has been made. For instances: Presdential hopeful John McCain just came back from Iraq and stated himself, there has been a lot of changes made for the good of the people of Iraq. And went farther to say, it will take a while longer. I believe if the capture of osama bin laden, the one responsible for 911, and brought back to America for hanging, forget a trial. This would bring a lot of enthusiam & reestablished faith in our Country and at least a reason for the death of so many American & Coalations Forces.

The "mass media" lately are somewhat more negative than positive, in my opinion. It takes a lot of critical reading to ferret out the truth.
Too many media sources are not objective; they try to influence public opinion to agree with their own. Another big problem is, that major "news" media are more interested in maintaining "important" contacts than in telling the truth. For instance, news media knew that if they told the truth about Iraq before Saddam was removed, they would be expelled from the country. So they didn't report what they knew, and thus served Saddam's interests. They should have told the truth, and let Saddam expel them. Then people would have understood what was happening. But they figured they would make more profit by cooperating with the dictator.
Our hope is, that since we have freedom of speech, these errors will be corrected by the free marketplace of ideas.

Which is your country?
Well in any country media plays selfish roll for their benefit. Some time the fallout is positive and some times it is negative.
Selfishness of Media in democratic countries will be on higher side compared to the media in the countries under communists or dictators.

Historically, it's had some positive moments -- look at what it did in the Watergate scandal, for example.

I think the negative impact comes from the black sheep of the profession -- the people who fabricate stories, make up sources, etc.

I think it is often negative. You know it's never a true picture of what's going. Just look at Mexico's newspapers and you see raw picture of people's brains spilled on the road. Here in the US, no way. They just prefer to be"diplomatic" and sugar coat or dramatise the truth.
