The only countries that can ever hope to be true superpowers are free countries. Countries with most of the power focused in the central government can never achieve that status. In case you have not noticed, there are many countries with far more natural resources that we have but have a hard time even keeping their people fed.
China is in a state of transition. The partial liberalization of the economy allowing at least some capitalism has caused the emergence of a middle class something no tyrannical socialist country ever has. Those self made people are getting their first taste of autonomy. They will become hungrier and hungrier for more.
Eventually, China will undergo a complete change of government. It will probably go the same way as the Soviet Union and break up into several smaller countries or states. If the current Chinese government tries to crack back down there will be a bloody revolution.
Once China becomes a free country they will be tough competitors economically but not belligerent militarily.

I'm assuming you mean economic super power right? I think the U.S is still pretty much #1 since we have a much more flexible system than China, India and Russia. They are up and coming but They have alot of abject poverty they need to deal with and that could be a real real problem for them. Europe, I think, will our biggest competitor as far as that status goes. However, I think we need some really wise politicians who make wise decisions for this country's future if we are going to stay that way. So far, all we have is dumb and dumber in the White House and I pray it doesn't getting any worse than that.

China will be A superpower, not THE next superpower. The next superpowers will be the US, EU, CHINA, and maybe even Latin America as some sort of cooperative block (under the banner of a Chavez like Socialism) as well as India. Also, Russia could also share the stage as well. The world will be multi polar.

I'm one of the few people left who think America will wake up and pull it together, muster up all our resourcefulness, and when our backs are against the wall we will fight our way back to the top. Economically, morally, politically, and militarily.
I know it seems hopeless sometimes when you listen to the democrats, and even some of our Republicans. But we still have that American pride and spirit, and we'll refuse to play second fiddle to anyone.

Obviously China is the driver's seat for that position. Growth in economy is staggering and everything points to them being a problem....for democray's around the world.
Keep your fingers crossed that they move towards a system that allows for individual freedoms.

So far, it has been US & UK. But the way i look at it, time's been changed and other nations that has been imposed by these two countries in last few decades are ought to get them. I deeply pray one can find the soloution and put the end on this.
