I was checking out this problem on Yahoo! Education that I can't seem to figure out. The link for it is:

http://education.yahoo.com/homework_help/math_help/problem?id=minialg1gt_3_1_1_4_20

The problem with that question for me is why do you use the reciprocal property in this case, and not others, and also, what happens to the number 4 that was in the original question?

Be sure to look at the "step" thing

Hi,

Solve.

4.......7
--..=..--- The reciprocal property is an extra unneeded step.
2y.....5

If it had just taught them to cross-multiply to solve the equation it would have been much easier and straight forward.

The "4" in the problem reduced from 2y/4 to y/2 in their method.

I hope that helps!! :-)

There's more than one way to skin cats, and to solve equations too. The simplest way is to cross multiply to get 14y= 20, and y= 1+3/7 . Using reciprocals leads to the same result.

Crossing:
2y * 7 = 4 * 5
14y = 20
y = 20/14
y = 10/7
