First of all mac os x core is unix based. Alot of electronics are linux, TiVO boxes and toshiba hd dvd player. The severs google uses are linux also. Finally their are linux operating systems that you can download free such as ubuntu. Ubuntu is awesome.

hello,
nowadays the unix os is used as servers in many business organizations. in telephone exchange the unix server is used as the call connecion server. in major countries the unix server is used for the overlaoded area and can used with the business info softwares. it is not used with the home applications. because it is more oriented with the command based mode. so it is little bit difficult to learn all the commands.
the linux is used for server as well as the educational organizations. this is the advanced version of the unix os with more GUI based applications.

in asian countries the linux os is most widely used servers for better access. that is the open source is avail for easy updates. thats y the major companies are now use the linux as the server.

As servers.
Unix is older and stabler. Linux has more toys.

Linux is more fun to try new powerful things with. But if its a box thats going in the closet and expected to run for years doing some old boring internet thing, then I go with unix.
