She is 7 months old and very dependent on her pacifier. She only gets it when she goes down for a nap or sleeps. but sometimes she wakes up in the middle of the night only for me to put it back in (or plug her up, as my husband says LOL)

I'm thinking that it's about time she gets rid of it. I'm not sure if I should, tho..since she really loves it. Btw: she doesn't have any teeth yet.

What do you think? If you think she should be weaned, how should I go about it?

Thanks for the advice!

When they start getting teeth. My son started teething at eight months and it hurt to have a pacifier. So we used it as a good time to get rid of it. Pacifiers ruin teeth.

My daughter was really attached to her "binky" as well. We played the drop the binky get the binky game for months and we were really tired of it. We finally went and bought some clip binky holders from the dollar store and all went well. We weaned her off of it starting at 11mos and it took her a couple of days to get over it, but she did ok. Just try not to make it a big deal. Try to replace it with a stuffed animal or a blankie. We held our daughter and just soothed her because she didn't take to a replacement. It was hard for a couple of days for us, but well worth it. I can't stand it when a child who is 3 still has their pacifier!

7 months is fine, especially since she isn't on it all the time. By the time she hits 12 months, she should be weaned off of it.

I have heard that using a pacifier/sucking thumbs is bad once a child has teeth. I had to have braces when I was a kid and I think it might be from thumb sucking.

My friend is a dentist & she said after 3 yrs. old is when it might hinder the shape of your mouth. However, due to genetics, for some kids it might be even sooner because my daughter's cousin's teeth/mouth have already changed shape while my husband's cousin, who is an adult now, claims she did it for 5 years & her teeth are fine.
I think for now it is fine for soothing, but something else to consider: it might hinder chances of speech practice when they start verbalizing. I stopped my daughter cold turkey when she was 17 mons. and she did fine.

after the 1st birthday or so you have to just stop giving it to her and let her deal with herself. i know it sound harsh but we learn throughout our lives to just deal with things. im glad to see you thinking about it because i can't stand seeing these 4,5,6 yearold kids with pacifiers

Just let her keep it. As long as you get soft pacifiers and keep them clean, they won't hurt her.

I think its too early to take it away. Sucking is a soothing action...Babies need it.
