Wonder is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "the emotion excited by the perception of something novel and unexpected. It includes astonishment mingled with perplexity or bewildered curiosity." It prompts us to consider how particularly vivid displays of vitality, beauty, or power might reveal a purpose or intentionality of the universe as a whole.

I am 41 years old and still experience the emotion of wonder almost daily. I am taking a physics course right now and am learning about the way our surroundings work. This is exciting. I find wonderment in almost everything still, the perfection and beauty of growing things in my garden or wild things, watching my children grow, looking at the planets and stars at night, thinking of how others perceive the world is a constant and amazing experience too. I'm not sure of the purpose or intentionality of the universe as a whole and I can understand why people think it was created by God.

Yes, I can remember experiencing the emotion of wonder at least once during our weekend visit at Oxford in the UK. It was ten years ago and I had never dreamed of such a town/city with great buildings, domes, colleges, etc. everywhere I walked and kept wondering how they had existed for the sake of true learning and as one of the best world class universities in the world. I reflected, if there were my reincarnation, I would be delighted and honored to study at Oxford. It is my unique wonder since it was mixed with awe, respect and admiration to the University, scholars and professors there.

You'll probably laugh at me . . . but my most frequent experiences of wonder are realising again and again just how smart my little dog is . . . I can't help but wonder if he speaks English!

The first time he left my jaw hanging open was late one night when I asked him if we should go watch TV in bed. He trotted past me and jumped up onto my bed, peeking around the corner as if to say, "Well? I thought this was your idea!"

The second time was when I had to feed him some tablets (which I always hide in small, doggie-sized sandwiches). When it was time for his tablet, I asked him if he wanted a sandwich, and he ran to the kitchen and sat on his butt, waiting, and showing me his lovely manners.

These are just two examples, but I don't think I'll ever get used to how smart he is!

as a child I remember going out into the dark of night in the woods of maine and seeing the trees sparkling with countless lightening bugs. Some were on the leaves and some were flying and they would stop lighting when i got near, so i didn't know what they were. I just sat in the pine needles under the trees and watched them fill the air as they danced by.

Remember? I experience it every time i look at the stars and think of how unfathomably far away they are or how every single person on this planet has a story filled with infinite emotions and wonders of their own. I think people get older and think just because they know a lot that there is not much left to know.

Yes I do, in the first grade when I learned about the existence of vowels and consonants. Okay, I'm a nerd but it filled me with wonder to realize how much knowledge was out there for me to find. I'm 49 now and I still feel that way.

Yes. When I see the beauty of nature. Especially in Algonquin Provincial Park. It is an extraordinary world. We must never take it for granted.
