jonmcn is exactly right. Too many people have this picture in their head of evolution as a "sequence" or chain. This is what leads to stupid questions like "why are there still monkeys?" or "why did apes stop evolving" or "where is the missing link?" (which gets its language from the image of a "chain").

It is a *far* more accurate picture to imagine life as a constantly branching *tree* or *bush*.

That would be an inaccurate, cartoon like picture. Evolution is not linear, but more bush like. Go to animalia taxonomy for a more accurate picture.
