actually it seems more like knitting... begin with 6 strings and it will look awesome! here's a website that kind of explains it a bit... they are also called friendship bracelets, I guess it's because you really have to love a person enough to spend hours doing this and then just give it as a gift! I've done plenty of these, it's a fun pastime!

Ok it looks difficult however with a great book and fab pics you will be able to figure this out!

I have the perfect book for you it is called Micro-Macrame Jewelry- tips and techniques for knotting with beads by Joan R Babcock.

I know ti pic link does not have beads in it but this book has a the knots you need to make your necklace.

You will probably use a mounting hitch to start off then use a Mounting Knot. You might also use the Lark's head knot.

Try this out I am sure one of these if not two of these knots are use to make that piece.

That looks very much like crochet. I made a blanket that has a very similar pattern. I might be able to find it if you are interested.

It could be buttonhole stitch over some sort of base, but I think it's more likely crochet over a base. It's not macramé.
