I know Bush tried to make people think he cut the deficit in 2006 by using money from social security, but whats holding them back from really changing the budget around and making some progress?

First of all, we did not run a huge surplus. Secondly, a surplus means the government took money it didn't need.

Now, the reason that government doesn't do something about debt is that they are encouraged by voters to spend money. If a senator from some state gets some pork or some benefit that he can sell to his constituents, they don't care that it's stealing money from someone else. They see the benefit to themselves or their locality.

Now, lots of senators and reps do the same thing, and they all retain power.

The government is doing something definite about the debt. They sent a team of high rollers to Las Vegas to go for it! Double or nothing.

The Dems just passed about 400 billion in new taxes, maybe that will help. Don't let the liberals kid you either. When they preach about enormous surplus amounts it's because they are taxing you more not cutting spending.

Because they are too busy putting out "distraction" fires to do any real government work. It's taking up so much time and effort defending their politics to the people who are just trying to distract them from their work.
