Can the Playstation 3 access the Internet through a WiFi hotspot or do you have to have a wireless network in your own home?

The playstaion 3 has Wi-Fi built in meaning it will detect any wireless connection where there is a wireless signal at any wireless hotspot and within your home network setup. It is much better to connect through your home computer wireless network since it is more secure and the playstation 3 would also need to connect to a television.

It would be foolish to bring your television and playstation 3 to a public hotspot for wireless connection. Plus some pubic wireless hotspots will charge you by the hour, day or month usage. From what I have heard the internet browsing on the playstation 3 is still difficult to use since there are no current keyboards that you can attach to the playstation 3.

Both -- If you have a router that would be best. The Ps3 is finicky and when we catch our neighbors signal or the free wifi for the county the ps3 reception is intermittant.

ps3 can connect where ever there is an internet connection, yet it is not hard to navigate web pages, you can use any usb mouse or key board, and you can install linux and even use mozilla firefox internet browser, I would know, I have a PS3
