I put all the fractions in parentheses for clarity:

yes, first you convert all the mixed fractions into improper fractions:

r+4 + (1/6) = (10/3)

next we need the denominators of all the numbers to be the same, so we find the Least Common Denominator (which is 6) and change the fractions to make 6 the denominator of each one.

r + 4 + (1/6) = (20/6)

subtract (1/6) from both sides:

r + 4 + (1/6) - (1/6) = (20/6) - (1/6)
r + 4= (19/6)

now we need to subtract the 4 from both sides:

r + 4= (19/6)
r + 4 - 4 = (19/6) - 4
r = (19/6) - 4

To subtract the two numbers on the right side of the equation we turn 4 into an improper fraction with denominator 6 (just like we did with 10/3)

r = (19/6) - 4
r = (19/6) - (24/6)

subtract the numerator to get:

r = (-5/6)

Hi,

r + 4 1/6 = 3 1/3

Make into improper fractions.

r + 25/6 = 10/3

Subtract 25/6.

r = 10/3 - 25/6

Get a common denominator of 6 on the fractions.

r = 20/6 - 25/6

Simplify.

r = -5/6

That's it!

I hope that helps!! :-)

r + 4 and 1/6 = 3 and 1/3
r + 25/6 = 10/3
r = 10/3 - 25/6
r = 20/6 - 25/6
r = -5/6

Here's how to convert mixed fractions of the form 'x and a/b' into improper fractions:

Multiply x and b
Add a

The number obtained is bx + a
Put b as denominator to get your improper fraction:

(bx + a)/b is your improper fraction

take 4 1/6 and make it 25/6 by multiplying 4 by six and adding one more 1/6. You need 6/6 for every whole, that is why you multiply the 4 by 6. Do that for the other side.

you get: r + 25/6 = 10/3

10/3 = 20/6 because a 1/3 is twice as big as a 1/6
so subtract 25/6 from both sides to get "r" by itself

and you get r = -5/6
