There are all sorts of reasons for caring.
However, I will give you one answer to how I witnessed a caring person being used.
A friend of mine was constantly allowing relations of hers from the country to stay at their home in the city when they needed medical care and operations. As these relations got sicker, they seemed to be constantly booking in for free accommodation, and also using my friends home as a base to go and visit their children whilst they where in the city.None of their four children would offer to look after them, and didn't want the responsibility of caring for them.
After my friend eventually refused in a nice way, she was not looked upon in a good light from those relations.
This is just one reason why people are no longer charitable, because they get used.

By watching tv etc, they are no longer being hurt by others.
Possibly the best lesson is to say "NO" in the first place, and screen the person that you are intending to help, to ensure they are genuine.

I personally think they use the video game to escape their lives and live in the fantasy of the game. My husband or I are not into that so, I don't know why its so cool to so many people around the world. We go to the gym, walk our dogs, go to the library, or read our Bible together. Sorry we have more productive things going on in our lives. Besides we give the the Milwaukee Rescue Mission and to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary also the American Cancer Society. Thank you for asking this:)

Lack of social skills when I was a kid got in the way. The biggest problem is that it's not encouraged to get involved with activities away from the screen.

Empathy is an evolutionary trait that must be gained by development and use of your right brain lobe. You must have a more developed brain to "picture or imagine" yourself in another's shoes, thus the empathy and more activism in helping others.

Experiencing trauma or abuse will instantly open those paths in that brain side also.
