I have a 5 gallon tank and I have 2 goldfish in it. I put this rock, gravel thing in it so I don't have to worry about ammonia. Is my tank still too small? Also can I put some other fish in it... or snails? If yes then what kind..?

I know of all the risks... I've had 'em 3 years and all this time they were in a 1 gallon... all this time I thought it was ok ( the pet store told me) This is temporary though I am trying to sell them and get other fish, so what fish should I get?

I would get a betta for your tank once you get rid of the goldfish .A 5 gallon tank is a great home for a betta, that is what I have in mine. You could also put a few smaller tetras like neon's or glow lites.

Hi Pauline, I recommend a minimum of a 20 gallon tank for a beginner due to the following reason.
1. A 5 gallon tank would require you to clean your tank at least once a week due to spoiled food and fish dirt's. A 20 gallon tank with proper filter would take you a month before you clean it.
2. Due to frequent cleaning a 5 gallon tank would not be able to keep good bacteria in your tank which is help-full to your fish.
3. As a beginner you would have no more space to add new fish to your 5 gallon tank. A 20 gallon tank can accommodate 8 to 10 fish depending on the species.
Thanks hope this is helpful to you.

Yes, no matter how good the water quality is, your tank is much to small for even one adult goldfish. They may be ok for a month or so, but will quickly out grow that 5 gallon tank. An adult fancy goldfish needs 15-20 gallons to be comfortable and an adult common goldfish needs far more than that. Unless you are getting a much, much larger tank in the very near future, you need to return those two and get fish that will stay comfortable in a 5 gallon even when adults.

Your tank is not OK for a long term situation. Goldfish grow to be very big and they are rather messy fish. You will need a larger aquarium and a very good filter. Do NOT add any more fish.

You ALWAYS need to worry about ammonia.

I have said this so many times... fantail goldfish will grow to be 8 inches, and the single-tailed will grow to be 16 inches...so yes it's far too small. but hey did you ever wonder why fish never live long in fish bowls?... and a rock thing for the ammonia? i've never heard of that...
