I love my best friend, we always have such great times together. But she has a habit of putting others down in order to make herself feel better. She does it in a jokey way, so I can't really tell her off. But it is starting to get to me.

You got it right...she does this because she is really self conscious about herself and she needs to do this to make herself feel better...joking or not...someone needs to point it out to her that she is hurting peoples feelings and that it bothers you personally very much. If she is putting you down then she isnt really a best friend to you and you need to tell her to stop or you wont hang out with her anymore.

You should not let any body (including you best friend) talk negative about you. Might hurt you. Keep you from getting a job. Choosing some one else instead of you. People be afraid of letting you do some thing such playing on sports team.
In my book. Friends would help you. Not stopping you.
Even though joking, people do not know that.

When people joke, there is usually half truth in it and it is better to let the person know and face the reaction than to have a false peace and suffer slowly and always having doubts as to whether this person is with or against you.

If your friend takes offense and "hits out" on you, it is easy to make a decision now - leave this person, she is not a friend if she does not respect your right of not being belittled at every turn for the sake of her ego!

I haven't spoken to one of my friends for that exact reason! She completely played me out in front of co workers and when we were alone (3 minutes later) I told her that she really offended me and her response was (surprise) "I was just joking". A joke's not a joke when no one is laughing... She still hasn't said anything to me since. No apology. No asking me why I haven't spoken to her. It's not cool to hurt others just to make yourself feel better. You don't really know what kind of damage you're doing to someone else.

Anyone who puts you down is not your friend. Next time it happens let her know how you feel. If she is truly your friend she will stop once she knows how you feel.

Since she's trying to cover it up with jokes, she knows it's wrong. It's ok to tell her off.

That's not a friend. Dump her. And yes, you can tell her off first.
