You could play Neverwinter Nights, it use's all the basic rules from D&D and it even has a little games window at the bottom of the screen to show you dice throws.

Yes...I played in several a few years ago. Not sure where to look now, but there are definitely D&D games going on around the net.

Yes you can, and there are a couple of different ways. I own a piece of software called "Fantasy Grounds" that allows people to play D&D online. http://www.fantasygrounds.com/

There is a free alternative, called OpenRPG. You can find it at the following link. http://www.openrpg.com/

You mean play-by-email. Sure, do some google searches and you should find plenty. I'd espetailly check message boards, they'd be the first place I'd look.
