That would depend on the plant. As was mentioned most cannot be positively id'ed until they grow larger and or flower. Some do have both female and male parts. A plant can be or look the same at any stage, kind of like pumpkins squash and gourds. they all look the exact same when seedlings but then take on different characeristics.

What type of plant do you have that you are trying to sex?

In most cases you won't be able to tell until they produce flowers. Even then, many plants have male and female parts within the same flower, some have separate male and female flowers on the same plant, while some have separate male and female plants.

It might help if you would say whay kind of plant you have (or if you repost your question in the "Botany" forum in the Science and Mathmatics listing - you put this in "Fish")

Depends on the plant. Need more info on what you are growing. Some plants have things that look like little balls(pollen sacks) The females have pistols that look like tiny hair. Once again without knowing what you are growing its hard to determine the right answer to question. Look at where the stem and 'branch' are located. The male will have balls especially if your artificially lighting them go 12/12 on the lights

It all depends on the species. You really can't for most species unless there is extreme sexual dimorphism. Plus, some species can change the sex.

If you are talking about the plant I think you are talking about....you really can't tell until they are close to maturity.
