How do you get rust off a cast iron skillet? Then, how do you keep it off? I thought I was doing everything right to take care of it but there is rust on the bottom or inside and on the outside. I clean it with hot water and dry it and put in the oven and it still rusts. What am I doing wrong?

Keep it oiled. Bake the oil on in the oven.

You need to season your skillet. After you wash your skillet rub oil in it. Put it in a 200 degree oven and bake it for about a half hour. Wipe excess oil out of skillet and put it away.

After you use your skillet clean it with hot water and a mild dish soap, rinse, dry and rub oil in it before you put it away. Never use a Brillo or SOS pad to clean your skillet. Anything that you cook in it will stick. Also when you cook in it do not use water as it will take the seasoning out of it then you have to re-season it again.

If your cast iron pans are really cruddy on the outside. Put them into a black garbage bag and put in some ammonia, seal the bag tight, leave it sit for a few days then hose them off the crud will come off easy, take them in the house clean them good, then re-season them. I tried it and it worked. Just make sure that you clean them real good after you leave them sit in the ammonia.

Cast iron skillets are what I use the most when I cook.

Take all the rust off with SOS.
Wash the skillet-wipe with paper towel-spray with Pam or rub with oil. Every time.
Then when you put it in the oven, the pilot
will help sseason it.

Your doing everything right, but just forgotten to do one thing. Grab a soft cloth and put some oil , (peanut, vegie, sunflower) on the cloth and rub it on the pan. You need to do this every time you use the pan.
Any cast iron pots and pans need to be treated in this way.

You need to scrub the rust spots with a Brillo pad and soap or with an SOS scrubber pad. Do this using the hottest water you can stand.

Rinse well. Dry with paper towels. Put on stove burner and "cook" over very, very low flame just until the pan is hot. Remove from heat. Let cool completely and store wherever you want.

You do NOT need to "season" the pan. Putting oil on your pans and then storing them that way is just inviting bugs and rodents. Yuck! Also, oil can spoil, meaning that you would be cooking with a rancid coating on your pan.

after you use it and clean it make sure its dry then take some veg oil and paper towel this really works after you've done this wiping it really good get out the bacon drippings anyone with a cast iron pan has bacon grease wipe it with the bacon grease and put up like that sounds a little gross but keeps the pans in great shape and thats how i GET 'ER DONE

Are you seasoning it,by that I mean take a paper towel and put some cooking oil in the pan about a teaspoonful will do the trick and rub it all around inside and outside of the pan. Do this everytime you use it and put it away.

after you wash it and before you put it in the oven spread cooking oil all over it and let it set, never let it air dry or use the dishwasher on it
