I wouldn't say that clownfish have much shorter fins than a lot of other fish their size. Judge for yourself in photos at this website - just click on a photo to see more photos of that kind of fish: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=15 I think boxfish, puffers, and angels have even smaller fins for their body size.

But the answerer above me is correct - it all has to do with evolution, and how/where they live. If they need to hide in spaces between rocks, having big bulky fins would be a disadvantage. Maybe the smaller fins helps them snuggle into their anemones better as well.

If you click on the photo of the clownfish in the link for "clownfish" on the website, you'll see the bodies of several different clowns - and if you click on the photo of one of the individual types, you 'll get information about that type. The body shape is similar in all, but the sizes and colors will vary by species.
