Well firstly Pearl Harbor stunned a lot of Americans, they didn't quite realize what had happened and what all it meant for the first few hours....then many got mad as hell and many young men wanted a piece of the war. There were huge lines outside recruiting stations as an example, men determined to take revenge right after the attack. President Roosevelts declaration of war speech galvanized public opinion and left very little doubt what he expected the final outcome to be. Look at the hardships endured on the homefront for the troops in the field, rationing of meat, sugar, tires and gasoline. Look at the huge numbers of women that took jobs once held only by men, shipbuilders, welders, factory workers and air transport pilots to name a few. Determination was everywhere.

It was a kick in the butt, a hard on at that but those who lived throught Pearl Harbor dusted themselves off and we all know what happened to Japan. And as for FDR's revenge, well even though he didn't get to order its use, the atom bomb was FDR's baby and his revenge.
