The Army didn't want Forrest telling people just what it was like because the protesters would have been even more pissed off. There was already so much dislike of war, the army didn't need people getting a view of it from the inside. They wanted people to think the war was being won and that it was a brave and good thing to do, not a horrible scary thing.
I love that movie.

At the 'actual' real life protest, this also happened as a vietnam soilder began speaking. Obviously, it wasn't Forrest Gump because he's fictional. But it did happen in real life and the sound system was restored moments later. As with most scenes in FG, they included Forrest as part of our real history to prove one of the points of the movie.

Here's a guy in full dress greens, and a Congressional Medal of Honor to boot speaking about his experience in Vietnam to a bunch of protesters. You think the army's gonna like that no don't think so, so they cut him off.

In case you're wondering, part of what he said was "Vietnam is a place where you can see your best friend get killed". I saw that on an HBO Inside Look years ago.
