The fact that you put "American" , in your question tells me you have no idea about REAL FOOTBALL. Then I read on and found that not only are you ignorant when it comes to football, you also want the good 'ole USA to learn rugby on a professional level, then kick as$ all over the world and hear y'all bit@h some more.
FOOTBALL is interesting because you don't know what it is!

The offensive and defensive strategy and the many facets of the game make it interesting to watch. Of course the violent nature of the game helps as well. American football is the ultimate team sport. The success of each team and game and play relies on the 11 men on the field working in unison. If there is one let-down, there can be failure. Each and every play (including special teams) requires a whole new strategic approach. It can be quite a social sport as well...10 seconds of chaos followed by 30 seconds of down time. Perfect for grabbing a snack, taking a drink or making a comment about what just happened or what they should be doing.
Rugby and football require two different skill sets and types of athletes. Football is much more violent that rugby. I would guess that there aren't many rugby players that would make it on any NFL team. At the same time, some of the best NFL players may not have much success on a rugby team. The big guys definitely wouldn't, but running backs and receivers might be able to play with success. I played on a inter-mural rugby team in college and enjoy the game, but watching it on TV (through the satellite or during European travels) just doesn't do it for me. I would much rather give up an entire Saturday or Sunday watching American Football then rugby.
Good question though...its all a matter of perspective and understanding the game I suppose.

I would say that football has more strategy and gamplanning, that makes the game very interesting. Also it's more than just "oversized guys beating the crap out of each other with helmets." Lots of athleticism is needed to play. Rugby seems like it's more of a meat head sport than football.

Because of the strategy involved, way more than in Rugby. Football is like chess. Each position has very specific roles and abilities. And people of any size can play football. In rugby, you just have to be big. Football is the ultimate balance of size versus speed. Steve Smith is the best wide receiver in football, and he's 5'9'' and 180 lbs. I wouldn't consider that over sized.
The only reason you find Rugby more interesting than football is because either you've never played football or watched it extensively. American football is by far THE most complicated and intricate sport out there. Because of the variability in size of the athletes on the field. They range from 160 to 360 lbs. And their speed does too.And speed is way more important than size in football. One wide receiver with 2 more inches and a .1 second better 40 run time than the cornerback checking him can totally force a defense to change their whole defensive game plan. And one REALLY good middle linebacker can take the NFL's #1 offense and shut it down. I understand though if you don't understand it, there's nothing wrong with you. Most American women don't like it either, so they won't take the time to understand it. But if you took the time to watch it really close for like a year, get to know the rules, get to know the player stats, you'd be totally floored by how much deeper football is than any other sport.

Football requires more strategy.
Rugby is fun and great physical conditioning.
But football not only requires the conditioning...it also requires the ability to survive up to 40 car wrecks a game.
Rugby players can't handle this type of impact.
My rugby players end up quitting before the season gets started - for some reason, my hockey players stay.

Because rugby is boring and they don't actually hit each other, they just run up from behind and jump on. In real football, you go head to head every play. You can say all you want, but those over sized guys are much more of an athlete than any rugby player I've met. I'd like to see you beat even one of them in a race. Screw rugby and soccer, they both are gay.

I think the guys that protect their noodles are smarter than the "tough guys" that play rugby. Football is better because NO ONE hits like they do in football, NO ONE. Rugby is physical but how long can those guys play before they're catastrophically injured? Less protection = shorter career.

Ever met an intelligent rugby player? no you haven't because of the brain damage they get in that sport.
And that over sized = muscle..
Plus, rugby is no where near interesting, you can't even pass the ball forward and it's all just havoc and you have no idea what the hell is going on, who has the ball, etc etc.
