I think that you just need to simplify this equation.
in this case the parentheses are pointless, however it is not always the case.
You can remove them like this:
x+9+x+9=?
Now how many x's do you see?
Are they positive or negative?
x+x=?
9+9=?
you could write this like:
2(x+9)=c (c looks better then a ?)

this means:
x=(c/2)-9

but since x can be anything, and c must be constant (well in my world at least) when x=0, c must still = c
this means that if indeed the ? implies that it is a constant that
0=c/2 - 9
or
C=18

but since my world and other peoples world are different lets make ?=y where y= a function of x.
Put simply y changes with x

x+9=(y/2)
x=(y/2)-9
y=2(x+9)
So for every value of x, y will have a value.
x=0 then y=2(0+9)=18
x=1 then y=2(1+9)=20
x=2 then y=2(2+9)=22
x=3 then y=2(3+9)=24

2(x+9) or 2x+18
you couldn't have an x= a number because it is an expression, not an equation.

I would say 2X + 18
or u might want to simplify it
2X + 18 = 0
X = -9

x plus x equals 2x
9 plus 9 equals 18
therefore...

2x=18

divide each side by 2 and u get...

x=9
