River was an excellent actor. No doubt had he lived he would be THE number one actor today. Each movie he made, he brought life to the characters he played and made them totally believable. He's not our James Dean. Our James Dean is John Belushi. River wasn't a winey, rebel actor. He was a serious artist who could make you believe he was a winey, rebel actor. No one can equal River. No one will ever equal James Dean. They were both (and John Belushi) one of a kinds! John only got to make a small handful of movies. River only got to make a little bit more than that. James only got to make 3 movies (but tons of television). None had the chance to shine, and it's their perceived potential that we mourn still to this day.

I suppose that analogy would work. I'm not sure if River Phoenix was as good of an actor as James Dean, but he met a young, tragic end like James Dean did. What's that saying, "Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse." I think they both fall into this sad category.
