Fill a power filter with water before plugging in. You don't want the impeller spinning dry.

Depends on the brand and the type - you should probably read the instructions first before doing anything, or look on line at the manufacturer's website. Priming is generally a good idea for most filters though.

Depends on the filter, it's usually best to prime before starting. Some newer canister filters are self priming.An in-tank filter should prime itself.Hang-on filters (Aqua-clear,Whisper,Penguin,Bio-Wheel)all require priming.
