I'm considering starting my own online store using drop shipping, and I'm in the process of deciding what kind of companies and products to work with and I'd like some ideas and suggestions on what you think is a good seller on the internet, or what have you bought or usually buy online, what do people would rather buy online than in an ordinary retail store? And is the adult industry still a big market even though the competition is bigger than any other market out there? Is it worth it? Any ideas, suggestions & comments are appreciated! Thank you :)

The very fact that you have used the term "drop shipping" indicates that you have a fair idea of selling things online successfully and differentiating yourself from the others.

What has a good demand is highly dependent on the georgraphy / segment you wish to target.

Currently, certain models of iPOD and Nokia are in very high demand. If you can identify a niche, eBooks are huge profit zones because there are literally no recurring costs once they are set up for auto delivery etc.

However.. some suggestions...

1) Never go by others' recommendations - you must learn to do your own research; the internet market is toooo dynamic and can change faster than you can blink! Use tools such as Overture and Wordtracker.

2) Try to focus on areas in which you are personally knowledgeable and passionate. Your customers will "know" that and you will earn your credibility, and therefore sales, faster.

Good Luck.

I agree about the looking into franchises. Just as brick and mortar franchises were very successful, and still are, they're explosive wave has passed.

However online franchises are wide open. The difficulty is finding the right one. Alot of the stable ones have excellent business systems, but you have to find the right people to work with. Many times I've seen a solid business plan get overlooked because someone unreputable has twisted it to shorter term gains.

Anyway, I'm very happy with the one I've decided to build on. So I suggest finding/contacting someone that has what you're looking for and learn all you can. That way you can make an informed decision. Just remember the person(s) you work with are just as important as the system you build.

I would think that your only chance is to buy into an existing franchise. To start off you need a big pool of merchandise to draw from. To set this up on your own would be very difficult. You need to do a lot of homework. There are very few roads to quick success. The greater the rewards, the greater the risk. I don't know the exact numbers but every year there is something like 4,500,000 new businesses started every year. Every year there is something like 4,250,000 new businesses that fail. The odd are not in your favor. Do a lot of research before jumping in.

Being fresh out of college, I was thinking that an online text book store would be a great business to start. I looked at a few and it seems like an industry that is not too crowded yet and has an unlimited customer base and no sign of decreased demand.
