I am a single parent whose main goal is to obtain a job I like with a high enough income so as to not be dependant anymore. I am graduating with a bachlors in sociology in december of 07. I want to get a masters in family and consumer science. I would like to teach women and children or work in healthcare/public health. I don't really know exactly what I want to be when I grow up. However, I have been part time for so long i need money to improve my quality of life, but the saying goes the longer you stay out, you won't go back. What should I do, i don't have a great GPA, single with three kids, and the masters program is a fast track one year program.

I would suggest it, but I would also highly recommend learning a foreign language as well, especially Spanish.

A woman I worked with had her masters in Social Service, but was working as a cashier at a restaurant; she couldn't speak Spanish and was having trouble finding a job because of it. Even if a certain position doesn't require that you be able to speak another language, many people striving for the same job probably can, and they will have an advantage over you.

I think you should go for it! Definately take the master's program! If you think the Master's program might be a bit much for yourself look into online courses. I earned my Master's through American Military University. All of the classes are online and the tuition is not that expensive. They are regionally accredited also, which means they are legitimate. That way, you don't have to worry about finding a sitter for the kids. You log into your courses when its conveniant for you. Classes are offered in 8 week and 16 week lengths. So it's possible to finish quickly or work slower. They also offer Federal Financial Aid (I definately took advantage of that). Anyways, I think you should definately go for your Master's. You'll feel so accomplished when you're done!
