are you trying to factor?

y^2 + 2xy - 8x^2

y^2 + 4xy - 2xy - 8x^2

factor by groups
(y^2 + 4xy)+ ( -2xy - 8x^2)
y(y+4x) + -2x(y+4x)

(y - 2x) (y+4x)
