Do You Hate Poems?
Do you hate poems?
Let me guess:
you think they’re cheesy, confusing, or just plain lame?
You find an Ode to be… oh so boring.
—a Shakespearean sonnet to be…
much ado about nothing.
—a blank verse is a…
blank verse.
—a Villanelle to be dizzying
and discomforting in its repetition.
Wait… sorry, you probably don’t know
what the hell a Villanelle is—my bad.
Do you get all tangled up by Charles Webb?
—shiver when you hear Frost?
Does Robert Graves make you… no that one’s too easy.
When your friend hands you a poem,
do you sigh on the inside, bite your lip,
and just try to get through it.
Then do you say, “It’s good”?
Are you just trying to get through this one?
You’re almost there.
Bet you won’t tell me “its good” when you finish.
Are you confusedandannoyed
by
unorthodox
lines
of
?poetry
Do you think poets are a little… “off”?
—maybe a little gay?
Ha! “a little gay”? Is that like “Almost pregnant”?
Does a rhyme seem a waste of time?
—a verse make you just wanna curse?
—each stanza make you wanna gouge
out your eyes-zuh?
(Well I’m sorry, but nothing freaking rhymes with stanza.)
Does any of this sound familiar?
Rest assured, you’re not alone.
We are.

Dr. Know It All, you are misinformed. Most of my work is in meter, but I stray from it here and there by my own discipline. The true poet uses every tool at his fingertips and never limits himself to one style, or form.

It's clever but I wouldn't call it a poem.
As my cat said to me the other day...

The thing about rhyme is it must have a meter
The rhythm divine, and there ain't nothing sweeter
For anything less is considered a crime
And exposes the poet as merely a cheater

I feel ya.

ONE GOOD THOUGHT

THE TANGLE OF

BEAUTIFUL LINES

JUMP INSIDE,

EAGER TO EXPLODE,

AND THEY DEFEAT

THEIR PURPOSE.

THROUGH THE HAZE

COMES LOGIC; NO MATTER

WHAT IS SAID,

SHOULD I MAKE JUST

ONE COMMUNICATION OF

POWER AND

FEELING FROM INSIDE ME,

FOR ONE MOMENT IN TIME,

YOU WILL REMEMBER ME.
