Replacement carpeting (we're moving). Looking at about a 15 foot hallway and 2 "average" size rooms that are maybe 12x12?. Just average carpet price and installation associated with something like that, what's a ballpark figure?

I'd say it's more like 100-150 for the hallway, 200 for each room. 500 dollars (including labor).
If you go to a carpet store (not Home Depot or Lowe's) you could probably haggle a bit or they might even throw in free padding, or free installation. Remember, when they mark the prices, that includes the bargain factor. So in reality, there is always room for a little negotiation. Make sure they take all the old carpet, too.

Carpets can range from 1 to 15 dollars per square foot depending on how luxurious they are. A middle ranged carpet would be for around 5 bucks a square foot.

From about $300-$400 If I'm wrong, I'm sorry! My grandma had a carpet put down in her house and it cost about $323.00.

You can figure it. Get the sqft and divide it by 9 to get the sqyds. Multiply that by the price of the carpet and figure in about 2 dollars a yd for installation. Plus add more for the padding whatever price that is per yard. The installation is included in the price for the installation. You might add maybe 5 to 10% on the carpet just to be sure you have enough.

I was thinking of doing the same at one time. I had a local company come out who did the measurements and gave me a cost for no fee. Maybe you have someone in your area who can do the same for you. Home Depot will also come out and do measurements for you for a small fee. I've had them out here for various other measurements and if I have not used their service they have refunded me the fee charged.
