The older women would be mother-in-law to the older man not married to her, but to her daughter. Her daughter would still be daughter-in-law to the younger son.

Likewise, the older man would be father-in-law to the older woman not married to him, but to his son. His son would still be son-in-law to the younger woman.

Nevertheless, they would probably have a difficult time getting these marriages recognized by the local constable.

My bet is that the younger son takes off eventually with his daughter-in-law when Dad falls asleep one day - having regretted marrying the old woman when the only difference that sealed the deal was her smaller feet.

Why can't you make this story more complex by having 2 or 3 of their sons and daughters marrying each other and ask others to find out the relation?

Mother becomes daughter in law to her own daughter as well as the father of the Boy whom she marries. Father becomes the father-in-law of the older woman who marries his son.

Daughter becomes mother-in-law as well as remains daughter to her mother who marries her step-son. She becomes step mother of the Son of her husband and becomes wife of older man.

Son becomes step son to the younger woman who marries his father and remains real son to his father and husband of the older woman

Forget about the relationships. the story simply suggests taht we need to make decisions only and only after we could study things with better perspectives. The father and sons were fools to make decisions based on their own conclusions. They didn't care to look futher and messed up things.

All the best...
