Why would people benefit from having this skill; and what are the consequences of not having this skill? My brain is stuck on the older generation needing to have Internet skills / word processing skills. I can't get outside that box. What other kinds of skills are there that most people don't have?

I would have to say personal finance! Most folks can't figure out their checkbook balance let alone credit card interest, mortgage interest, etc. i think this is why so many people were fooled by the mortgage industry when their purchased their homes in the last 2 years. Most people inthe US are heavily in debt and I think most of it is due to a lack of understanding of personal finance.

Tai Chi. It's been proved as an excelent tool for older people to increase body awareness, and actually prevents injuries, reducing falls and such.

Reading. Many people (in fact the average) have about a 6th grade reading level, which is what most local newspapers are geared to. Reading at a higher level increases one's understanding of the world; it provides skills necessary to understand what a doctor or lawyer might actually mean in their writing. Even if you don't understand the words, those with a better reading ability are more likely to be able to find out what these documents may mean.

Writing. As evidenced on Answers, many people lack basic writing skills, with poorly formed sentences and terrible spelling.

Music. Playing a musical instrument actually helps people in most other ways of their lives. Such people are usually better students, and are quite creative.

Mathematics. Most people have very little understanding of mathematics. Given a problem such as 2+3*4 = ?, many people would come up with the incorrect answer of 20, instead of 24 simply because they don't understand the order of operations. Given this, any algebra or higher math is already out of the question.

Those are a few.

How about, filling out applications for a job, and learning how to do interviews well if they are called for the job. Most people do not know how to fill out application correctly, and if they get called for the interview they would need to know, the best time to show up for your interview, they say it's at least 15 minutes early. How to dress, how to speak properly without studdering or hestitating. How to stay focused, not give off to much information, or babbling on. How to give direct eye contact. And so on. But your ideal of computers knowledge and internet was a great ideal. It's actually the first one i came up with. Why cant you use that?

The skill that most ppl do not have but could benefit from mastering is the skill of abstinence! Not only from SEX, but also from ALCOHOL and FOOD.

Benefits of abstinence from SEX (encourage self control, concur with religion etc). Consequences (gonorea, syphilis, HIV etc).

Benefits of abstinence from ALCOHOL (health, self-productivity increases result in growth of economy on a larger scale, etc), consequences (OBESITY, self-destruction, cause bodily harm to others - freakish accidents etc).

Benefits of abstinence from "bad" (you can then define bad) FOOD (health, reduces risk of diseases/food poisoining, more food resources channelled to poorer communities, countries etc). Consequences (OBESITY, OBESITY, OBESITY, conorary heart disease, and all the sicknesses in the world pertaining to over-indulgence of bad and even good food). Of course this is subject to proper abstinence, not to the extent of anorexia or bullimia.

This is a great essay topic, hope this gives you a fresh idea as abstinence covers a lot of subtopics.

A crucial skill to have is integrity. You can imagine the consequences of not having integrity; we see it in everyday life. Many people do not have true integrity, but if someone does have it, of course he'll benefit from it.
