Can i use sand found on the desert or does it have to be special sand and do they need a lot of it.

Oh and how big do they have to be to put in the sand.

You don't have to use anything on the bottom, but it makes the eggs easier to collect so you can hatch a new group later. It would only need to be enough to give a little covering to the floor of their hatchery (maybe 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep).

Anything that's safe for use in an aquarium would be okay to use. If you're going to use some that you collect yourself, I'd put it in a fine strainer and rinse it under hot water very well first (you may want to put a bucket or dishpan under the strainer so that small pieces of sand don't go down your drain!).

I'd put the sand in from the start - when they lay the eggs and die, yo can remove the dead triops and evaporate the water to collect the sand and eggs - the link below will tell you how to care for the eggs so you can hatch them.
