How many have tried to walk away but were persuaded by their spouse to stay ? Can a marriage survive after one person has attempted to leave ? What if they only stay out of pity ?

Of course it can work. The power of love is quite strong. If the feelings of love where there before the crisis, the marriage can be saved. I speak from experience.
My husband and I were separated. He walked away (to prove a point I feel) but he came back shortly after and it worked out fine. I filed for divorce when I was ready to give up, but we've rebuilt our relationship from the bottom up and are very happy. There were times when he would ask if I thought we would make it and I would say, "Yes, people have survived worse than this. We can make it work."

Some marriages will last no matter what. And that's not necessarily a good thing.
Staying out of pity?
That will probably only last so long before the one doing the pitying wises up.

Yes but this marriage needs some definite work on it and probably via some professional counseling to bring out the deep rooted problems and work thru them or else nothing will be accomplished and nothing will change. Both need to want the same result if this is to ever work. Good luck

There is always a chance so long as their is effort...lets say they stayed out of pity...it still means they care enough to not leave...somethings stronger than the pity or else they would have not stayed...Yes ...its not over until it is over.

It wont last. I was the one in my marriage that asked him to try counseling etc...I would of done anything to make it work. What people have to realize is not every relationship is meant to be forever. We lasted 4 yrs after our "crisis"....divorce was the best thing for us...

The marrage is doomed. But stay for the kids if you can and then get the hell out asap after the kid grows up (if you have no kids get out fast).
