Some of the newer games have been slamming my 2.8 Ghz processor at 100% and keeping it there. I recently downloaded a game and the RECOMMENDED speed was 500 MHz... does the CPU try to compensate for an old graphics card?

Thanks, that is what I wanted to know... I have a Nvidia GeForce 5600 in the mail now... should compensate for this. I had a feeling that the CPU was responsible for backing up the GPU when the GPU was overloaded... just needed to hear someone else say it :).

Simple Answer: Yes

Longer Answer: Still yes but there is more to look at. The GPU is responsible for dealing with heavy graphics processing load so the CPU can do the rest. The older GPU or onboard video can't keep up so your CPU is picking up its slack. Be careful, in this kind of situation poor cooling can become a damage dealer fairly quickly. Both are working under a full load the ambient temperature will go through the roof. The GPU and CPU as well as any other components not properly cooled in the case could be damaged over time.

not at all. The GeForce 7100 is in user-friendly terms a chipset with its very own cooling and diverse tactics. that is thoroughly break away the CPU. With that stated, once you're journey greater CPU temperatures I enormously propose which you a million) sparkling out your workstation from dirt with an air duster 2) replace the thermal paste with some arctic silver (google it) it is going to therapy the temperature issue.
