The main reason your fry aren't growing faster is that they need a far larger tank to grow. 100 young fish need at least a 20 long, better a 40 gallon tank to grow to adult size. Also, you need to be changing about 50% of the water every day and cleaning out any uneaten food as you go.

As for the 10 gallon and fish dying, maybe you cleaned it too well and too fast. You may have damaged the cycle and have fish dying of ammonia problems. This would explain the gasping for air as well.

The female that is laying in the back of the tank could be suffering from it too, just even more because she gave birth.

The big problem with livebearers (such as platys, mollies, guppies and swordtails) is that they bred so quickly that you can easily overcrowd your tank. I'd suggest that you only keep male livebearers, so you know there won't be any surprises.

You should not have more than one inch of adult fish per each gallon tank. That means, if you have two adult mollies at 4 inches each, you need at least an 8 gallon tank for just the two of them!

If you have so many fry, and plan for them to live to adulthood, you're going to need a lot more space for them!

Do you have a water test kit/strips. The pH should be about 7.6. Most live bearers like you have prefer the water a little acid. Make sure you use a water conditioner to remove chlorine and other chemicals from the tap water. About once a month, drain about 1/3 of the water out and add new balanced water. Fish like yours like it warm, so make sure you have a heater, but make sure it doesn't get too hot. Make sure you don't have lotion or cologne on your hands if you put them in the water. You can buy an additional air pump and put an air stone on it. No, your aquarium can't be too clean. Check the balance of the water. Sound like you are on the right track, but it's really sad, I know, when the fish start to die. Talk to the pet store or aquarium center.
