I answered a nearly identical question just a couple of days ago. Here's what I said then and what I still believe:

America has been called a melting pot. That implies to me that we all just get boiled down, mixed together with everyone else and poured into a mold to become some sort of stereotypic American clone. Frankly, I'd find that boring!
What I see is an America that is more like a salad with a potpourri of flavors in its geography and cultures, a country where each American imparts a unique taste that contrasts with and complements the others. I want a nation that gives birth to ideas and values that have been nourished by the richness and diversity of the whole world.
All that's required is that each of us embrace the individual contributions and talents of our fellow citizens while indulging our abundant curiosity and developing our own abilities to the fullest.
Each of us must accept our responsibilities to share our gifts and passions with the each other so that we are all enriched.
This is what makes America a land of hope and an endlessly inspiring place where creativity can flourish as nowhere else on earth. It's the dream that brought all of us here in the first place and it's what will continue to make America dynamic and strong.

To me it means a Continent of inward looking, sanctimonious, gun toting, racist bigots who think they are the world's police. I also see a people blinded by unthinking patriotism,to question which,is interpreted as un American. I see a country forever at war, with giant oil and arms companies dictating government policy, a government always willing to send their young men and women to unnecessary wars to die for IBM and Coca-Cola. I see a country in danger of being dictated to by religious fundamentalists (Christian) every bit as dangerous as Al Quida.
Having said all that, most Americans I have met overseas have been nice friendly people. Keep your hawks, send out your doves and the rest of the world will respect you again.
