We seem to be investing a lot of lives and money into what now seems a “no-win" situation. In the end will there be monetary compensation, heavenly compensation, or just a warm fuzzy feeling after all the suffering is over?

The powers behind-the-scenes ordered George W. Bush to unconstitutionally and illegally invade Iraq for three really 'lame' reasons:
1) The Bush family had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein ever since the days of Desert Storm when George H.W. Bush was criticized, ridiculed and humiliated for 'not finishing the job' at that time, and ousting Hussein from power;
2) The Bush-Cheney team of oil profiteers want all that cheap, easily-accessible OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands so their Exxon-Mobil buddies can get richer and richer and richer feeding American motorists' addiction to OIL;
3) After World War II, the giant U.S. military-industrial complex saw how profitable 'war' could be. So it bought up all the politicians, hired pricey lobbyists, and formed special interest groups to encourage and promote 'war'. Thus, the U.S. was involved in the Korean Conflict; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the Cold War; Vietnam and Desert Storm - all so that war profiteers could pile up billions of dollars in profits, regardless of the cost to humanity.
Anyone who believes that the U.S.A. has any interest in bringing 'democracy' to Iraq is either incredibly naive, or just too plain ignorant to see the truth.
If we truly think we'll be out of Iraq in the near future, WHY is the U.S. building the largest embassy in the world on a 104-acre site in downtown Baghdad overlooking the new 'puppet' government installed by the Bush administration? We will be in Iraq until we've sucked every drop of OIL from that nation's sands. And - we will unconstitutionally and illegally invade Iran (probably this spring) for the very same reasons: OIL and WAR PROFITEERING. Don't believe me? Print this out and put it in a safe place, just to see whether I'm right or wrong. As soon as the Bush handlers can come up with a plausible reason to attack Iran that 'ditto heads' will buy into - we will invade that country, just as we did Iraq (which, by the way, in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the U.S.A.). The Bush administration has killed hundreds of thousands of people just for the sake of OIL and MONEY. -RKO- 04/02/07

American Troops are in Iraq to ensure that the price of Oil doesn't fall below $55 a barrel.

Before we invaded it was $22 a barrel and Chevrons quarterly profits were $2 Billion.
Now it's $63 a barrel and Profits are in the hundreds of billions.

What would the first "Democracy" be. Certainly not Israel.

Yes Carlene, but there wasn't a terrorist threat from Iraq before the coalition invaded. Nor was there a threat from WMDs, since there weren't any.
American (and other) troops are there because Bush sent his troops in and others followed blindly. Bush sent them in to get rid of Saddam (which was an illegal act), under the pretexts given by false intelligence, because Saddam was turning away from the dollar as payment for oil in favour of the Euro.

We are there because Bush couldn't capture Osama and he wanted someone to pay for 9/11, so he decided to pin it on Saddam and go bomb the hell out of them. Now, if he were to pull all the troops out, the Iraqi people would retaliate. Not that there is ever going to be a good time to pull out of Iraq, but it might be a little safer when Bush isn't in office since he would most likely be target number one.

It seems to me that most people who ask this question never vote and really have nothing or anyone involved.I do not really agree with everything that is going on but if this problem had been finished in 1991 we would not be there now.We could leave but as soon as we do Iran will probably move in.To answer your question we are there because they cannot defend themselves at this time.

Best-case scenario is that in the end there will be a second stable democracy in the Middle East, and the first Arab one (unless you want to count Egypt). Twenty-seven million people will be free. We will also have a strong ally in the global war on terror.

It also is hoped that Iraq's example would lead other countries to move toward democracy, as was beginning to happen recently in Lebanon, Libya and Egypt.

Finally, while we've spent a lot of money, the American lives lost is the smallest in history compared to any war. While I haven't seen a comparison to costs today vs. costs in World War II (and adjusted for inflation), it wouldn't surprise me if those costs were also quite low.

Because we have a President who doesn't know how to get them out- without admitting he made a mistake by sending them there in the first place.
