What are the dangers of leaving a clothing iron on and unattended for 7 hours? And doesnt a iron use alot of power?

Fire would be my first concern.

It could short out and cause a fire or someone could knock it over and it would burn your ironing board. Its a danger and a waste of electricity leaving on for sure. If you forget to unplug things at least look for an iron with an auto shut off, they will turn themselves off if you don't lift them for 10 - 15 minutes.

A malfunction could cause a fire. Irons use energy to stay at set temps. They are not energy efficient. Although they are not made to use for that many hours, they are made to endure the set temps. You were just lucky if you left it on that long.

It uses about 700 watts of energy and you had better increase your homeowners insurance..

it doesn't make anything unless it has a defected thermostat (it may start a fire) but it will consume a lot of energy in vain .

Overheating...though some nowadays turn themselves off if not used for a while...
